Boiling Springs adding electric car charging stations – Shelby Star

The town of Boiling Springs will be adding two electric charging stations to its downtown area.
Justin Longino, town manager, said they have a lot of big projects in the conceptual stage and have begun applying for grants to fund them.
One of those grants was for electrical vehicle charging stations.
“We’ve got the go ahead from the state, it was a state program from where we got the funds,” Longino said.
He said there will be two stations with two ports for a total of four ports.
Currently, town officials are looking for quotes before they order the stations and have an electrician lined up.
They will be installed in a parking lot in the small downtown area by a strip of businesses.
Longino said the funds came from a Volkswagen settlement which were dispersed by the state to go toward electric chargers and other infrastructure additions.
The total cost of the project will come to a little over $30,000 with the grant covering the majority of it.
The goal is to have them installed around the first of the year.
The city of Shelby added a charging station to a city parking lot near the farmers market pavilion in 2014, becoming the first location in Cleveland County to offer the service. Last year, the city also received a Volkswagen settlement grant and added two level two charging stations, one near the pavilion and another near the Shelby Police Department.
As of last year, according to PlugShare, a website which helps electric vehicle owners find places to charge their cars, Shelby has four places to charge: the pavilion in uptown, Ingles on Fallston Road, the Nissan dealership on South Post Road and at a hotel on East Marion Street.
Longino said Boiling Springs has recently gotten a handful of questions from people asking whether they were going to offer electric chargers and they hope to partner with Gardner-Webb University in the future to add more.
