The Indian Army plans to induct electric vehicles in its fleet, given its operational commitments to reduce carbon emissions and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
According to media reports, the Indian Army will be inducting electric light vehicles, buses and even electric motorcycles. It is said that the army will replace around 25% of light vehicles, 38% of its buses and 48% of its bike fleet at select peace-time units.
The army is also setting up solar panels and charging points, at offices and residential complexes. The report states that a tender for buying 60 electric buses and 24 fast chargers is likely to be floated soon.
The deployment of EVs is said to have already begun in New Delhi. More EVs will be inducted at Lucknow, Pune and Kolkata soon. At present, the army operates civil-hired electric vehicles to meet its requirements.
