Delhi News Highlights: Delhi on Thursday reported 111 fresh Covid-19 cases at a positivity rate of 0.38 per cent, and one death, taking the total number of infections to 18,64,246 and toll to 26,149. As many as 145 persons recovered from the infection today and the active caseload stood at 455. Delhi had reported 132 Covid-19 cases with a positivity rate of 0.40 per cent on Wednesday while no death due to the infection was reported.
A fire broke out at a banquet hall in Delhi’s Rohini Thursday afternoon, injuring a person and damaging a few vehicles. Delhi Fire Services said they received a call around 1.48 pm about the blaze and rushed to the spot with 12 fire tenders.
A district court Thursday denied bail to former Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students’ leader Umar Khalid in connection with a Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Amendment Act (UAPA) case registered against him following the riots in Northeast Delhi. The order was passed by Additional Sessions Judge Amitabh Rawat at the Karkardooma district court which has been hearing the bail application for 8 months and had deferred the order thrice in the past.
A Delhi court on Thursday allowed the NIA more time to complete its investigation in a case of terror funding in Jammu and Kashmir against human rights activist Khurram Parvez and two others.
Special NIA judge Praveen Singh also extended the custody of Parvez, Muneer Ahmad Kataria and Arshid Ahmad Tonch by 50 days, saying chances of tampering with evidence cannot be ruled out.
In its application, the NIA alleged that Pakistan-based proscribed terrorist organisation Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) has established a widespread network of operatives for providing support in planning and execution of its terrorist activities in various parts of India. (PTI)
Delhi University’s Academic Council Tuesday approved undergraduate admissions for the academic session 2022-23 based solely on the Common University Entrance Test (CUET). This will not only apply to most DU colleges that hitherto held admissions on the basis of cut-offs calculated on the basis of Class 12 marks, but also minority colleges, including the prestigious St Stephen’s College.
The proposal by the Standing Committee said, “It was decided that all admissions to all minority colleges…will be done only through CUET. During centralised counselling, separate merit lists will be generated for UR (unreserved) and minority candidates as per the reservation policy.” Read More 
In a scathing attack against BJP, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said that if BJP wants everyone to watch the movie The Kashmir Files, filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri should release it on YouTube so that it is available to everyone.
This comes a day after BJP legislators in the Delhi assembly interrupted the ongoing budget session, demanding that the movie The Kashmir Files be made tax free in the state, Chief Minister Kejriwal said that if the filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri wants everyone wants to watch the movie, he should release it on YouTube so that it is available to everyone. The Delhi government has decided to close all fixed vaccination centres in schools, with Covid-19 vaccinations in the capital seeing a dip after reaching saturation in the adult population. However, vaccines will continue to be administered to children between the ages of 12 and 17 years in temporary camps at their schools.
More than 90 per cent of Delhi’s adult population are double-jabbed and schools are to become fully functional soon. Read More
Opposing JNU student Sharjeel Imam’s bail application in an alleged hate speech case, the Delhi Police Thursday told the Delhi High Court that the offence is grave in nature and the lower court has proposed to conduct a trial on a day-to-day basis.
The High Court on March 9 had questioned the manner in which the trial court dealt with Imam’s bail application. Observing that the order passed by the lower court is very circumscribed, a division bench had said, “Why should he not be enlarged on bail… he (trial court) deals with nothing.” Read More

After a viral video showed a man from Jammu and Kashmir being denied accommodation at a hotel in the national capital, the Delhi Police on Wednesday clarified that it had not directed hotels to cancel reservations made by those from the union territory.
“A purported video is viral on social media wherein a person is being denied hotel reservation due to his J&K ID. Reason for cancellation is being given as direction from police… no such direction has been given… willful misrepresentation can attract penal action,” Delhi Police tweeted on Wednesday night. A CBI court Thursday rejected the bail plea of former group operating officer (GOO) of the National Stock Exchange (NSE), Anand Subramanian, in a 2018 case of bourse manipulation. Special Judge Sanjeev Aggarwal denied bail to Subramanian, who the Central Bureau of Investigation alleged was impersonating a “Himalayan yogi” and influencing the decisions of the former managing director (MD) Chitra Ramakrishna. The trial court had recently granted the first bail in the case to former councillor Ishrat Jahan on March 14. A Delhi court on Thursday denied bail to former JNU student Umar Khalid, who is accused under UAPA in a case related to the Delhi Northeast riots.
The maximum temperature in Delhi is likely to settle at around 36 degrees Celsius, not far from the 35.7 degrees recorded the previous day, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in an update issued Thursday morning.
The maximum temperature recorded on Wednesday was five degrees above the normal, in keeping with the above-normal temperatures that the city has been recording for about ten days. Delhi’s GDP went up by 50 per cent over the past five years showing the “strong position” of the Capital’s economy, Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal said on the first day of the budget session of the Delhi Assembly Wednesday. A 17-year-old boy allegedly assaulted and killed an 85-year-old man after the victim’s dog barked at him in Delhi’s Dwarka area, the police said Thursday.
The incident took place during Holi celebrations on March 18 in Najafgarh. The deceased, identified as Ashok Kumar, was inside his house when the boy broke in and tried to beat Kumar’s dog with an iron rod, the police said. When Kumar objected to the attack, he was thrashed with the rod by the boy. He succumbed to his injuries. Read more 
A 27-year-old man was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Gurgaon on Thursday morning, the police said.
The Police informed that the deceased has been identified as Rakesh Gujjar, a resident of Shyampur village of Alwar’s Behror area. They added that the incident took place at around 7.30 am in Pataudi area’s Lokra village. A villager noticed the body of the deceased lying near a farm area and informed the control room, following which a team from Pataudi police station rushed to the spot. Read more

Real-time pollution data will be available in Delhi from Aug 1
Real-time data on sources of pollution in Delhi will be available from August 1, according to a communication from the Delhi government. Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal chaired a review meeting with teams from IIT Kanpur, IIT Delhi, and The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) that are part of a Real-Time Source Apportionment System and pollution forecasting project.
‘Remember your promise when Delhi MCD polls are held’: BJP MP to Kejriwal
A day after Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said that he will quit politics if the BJP manages to conduct the municipal polls on time and wins it, West Delhi MP Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma hit back saying the CM should remember his promise and not go back on his words.
“If not today, the elections will be held after four months. However, do not go back on your words that you will quit politics,” Verma said, while adding that the delay was caused because of the merger of corporations and not owing to fear of the polls.
